endyve . male . angler-eel

from the depths of the darkest abyss, a small eel grew curious about the world aboveβ€” a world from which sunken debris and scraps would drift down from. when his hunger outgrew his body, he resolved to find better food.now, he's an aspiring artist, a curious chef-in-training and a loveable half-fish-man with a colourful closet.having always been relatively forgetful, he uses his paintings to remember the things important in his lifeβ€” like his family, his friends, and most importantly, his multitude of (platonic) lovers.
β™‘

sometimes, his energy drains from looking like a cute little "human" for too long. at that point, it's hard to hide his true nature.he sheds his mostly human appearance for a looooong tail, razor sharp fins and a bright angler's reel. his hands, originally a fading charcoal black, turn entirely tar-black as color fades from his skin.sacrificing his sight to enhance his other senses, he willingly succumbs to the side of him that is very much an animal.the abyss returns to being his hunting groundβ€” with his body keeping him voraciously hungry, he is willing to pursue anything deemed prey for as long as it takes.once he has his gaze set on his next meal... there's no coming back.

here's all the beautiful people i've been able to draw myself with!!

It's not uncommon for anglerfish to be left alone from birth.
At least that's what the books told him.

Human Contact
.
The night air is humid, making the man tug at his shirt collar. It lets go of sweaty skin after a decent tug, earning a tired sigh from the man. It's not been a great fishing season this summer, and it shows -- his shirt is starting to wear thin, and his hat, having endured summer after summer without replacement, is ripping at the seams. But he won't give up his favourite hobby, and so he flings a hook into the ocean, the only sound in his ears the tossing and turning of waves.
He doesn't know when he's nodded off, really -- but the sound of the wooden dock creaking startles him, the rod in his hand slipping from his grasp as he jolts awake in his seat. With shaky hands, he attempts to grab it, knocking his hat off his head in one clumsy sweep. Both land in the water, one splashing harder than the other as it sank beneath the surface.Weary of his misfortune, the man plucks his floating hat off the water and pops it back on his head, ignoring the way it only soaked his shirt even more. Reluctantly accepting the disappearance of his fishing rod, he turns his gaze to the now still water -- almost as if the ocean itself were holding a breath. He'd never seen it this still, especially not during the summer, when the bright rays of the full moon would cause the waves to toss tumultuously. As the silence seemed to soak into the man's ears, he stepped back as the dock itself began to creak, the water underneath it stirring with a strange energy. The dark tide seemed to claw violently at the support poles, only dying down after a few minutes, letting the ocean return to it's ominous stillness. Seemingly on it's own, his lost rod pokes itself over the edge of the rotting dock wood, before clattering onto the weedy planks.
Visibly disturbed, he snatches the rod off the dock, before hurrying off.
That night, he'd write about the strange occurrence, before falling asleep hoping that it was only a one-time phenomenon..
The next full moon, he approached that very same creaky dock, his fingers mentally crossed as he flung the hook into the rolling waters. It was a better week, with a few more nice catches here and there.. Sitting down in his new folding chair, he kept his eyes on the bobber. It tottered on the rolling waves, the little red ball riding the waves as they swept in and out. The night wasn't as humid this time, and he was grateful for that -- the heat had been baking him alive, even without the sun's rays. And without fail, he found his head nodding.
Sleep called; He blinked tiredly, a soft sigh leaving him as he relented, body relaxing into the hold of the folding chair. As his eyes began to close, a faint light passed the little red bobber unnoticed..
The third full moon came quickly, the fisherman having been wrapped up in good fortune after good fortune to notice. By then, he thought to fix the creaking dock; It had seaweed growing out of it's cracked supports, and likely would collapse soon at the rate that barnacles were grabbing onto the wood. As he approached the dock, hauling planks and tools with him, he noticed the water had stilled again. He too, felt the need to stand still, so there he stayed, frozen in pla--
One by one, blackened claws scraped against the wood of the rotting dock, the creaking the only noise apart from the quiet rumble of the water. They were too long to be human, he thought, sucking in a fearful breath as something, no, someone-- hefted themselves from the ocean in a spray of salty water. From where he was standing, he wasn't able to discern much other than the shape of what looked like a human. A little white light danced around what he reckoned was their head, blinking in odd patterns as the being settled itself down in his folding chair. The chair creaked in protest under their weight, the pained screech of bending metal ringing through the night as it snapped under their form. But the sound wasn't what caused him to tense up, rather... it was the two empty eyes that bore into his very soul. He mentally cursed himself for being spotted, before attempting a weak wave -- hoping to god that it was just another passing person. Before he could even jump back, the being snaked towards him with ease, dragging more and more of their tail out of the water. A sharp barb threatened to pierce his chest, having appeared from behind what looked to be the creature's tail fins."W-Well. I.. I din't mean ya any harm, really!" The man wanted to slap himself upside the face when he heard his voice crack under duress, throat reflexively swallowing as he met the being's gaze with his own. Slowly letting go of the things he'd brought with him, he plopped down on the sand, keeping his hands up near his face..
As if recognizing the fear in his eyes, the creature backs up, coiling their tail around themselves as they maintained a respectful distance. It's surprisingly humanlike, the upper half, with the exception of it's blackened hands, which nervously grip onto it's largest coil. The man slowly lowers his hands, before carefully opening his cooler-- it was a fish, right? It'd want something to eat, just like any other fish he'd caught.. Carefully grasping the spiny fin of one of his earlier catches, he holds it out to them. Underneath the moon's rays, the branzino's scales glisten, tempting the being to gingerly grasp the other end of it.
It takes a moment to eat, turning off to the side whilst keeping an eye on the man. All the while, the barbed end of their tail waves in warning, as if to tell the man to "respect the distance". Now that he had more time to observe the creature, he noticed the way colored light trailed down the length of their body, pulsing purple and red as they ate. When they're done eating, they lower their tail before turning to him, carefully inching closer and closer until their head nudges his hand. Surprised, the man isn't sure what to do, but he tries-- calloused hands ruffling the being's white hair as their cheek-fins flicked with what he could only assume is happiness."Aren'tcha friendly.. Hope the fish was fresh, yeah?""Y.. es, very.."
He sits up in alarm at sound of the strange creature's voice, the being withdrawing to it's full height.
"I'm s... orry to have scared you." It struggles to speak from disuse, it's voice cracking here and there as it continues. "I am Endyve, an angler.. fish."
The man isn't sure what to make of the introduction, but he holds out his hand in warm greeting. "Nice t' meetcha'... I'm Matt.".
Endyve appeared to only Matt, it seemed. He'd tried bringing a friend, telling them the whole tale from start to finish, but the lack of appearances made him think he really was going crazy for his age. Settling into the new chair he'd bought, he checked his baitbox and cooler, making sure he had a branzino on ice just in case. And as expected of it, not much time passed until the being's heavy weight was pulled onto the new dock, settling down in a coil next to Matt's chair.
"Didja miss me, fella? Or was it just the free fish?" He laughed, the sound jovial in the darkness of the summer night as he opened the cooler to them, watching as they devoured the fish, bones and all."I miss.. ed you." They quietly comment, after finishing their meal.
"At least someone misses me." He hefts a sigh, something clearly weighing on him as he spoke, "My kids don't miss me no more. My wife? She's gone. Done, up n' vanished." He's not even sure why he's telling them this, given that he barely knows them, but.. Matt just talks, frame slowly relaxing as he lets go of the built-up stress. Once he realizes he's rambling, he turns to them, genuinely curious about his new companion. "Ya got any fam'ly?"
.
The question seems to weigh on them, their bright eyes turning dull as they let the silence overtake the conversation. Clearly offput by the sudden silence, the man settles back into the chair with a sip of his drink. "Lemme rephrase that. Where'd ya come from?"
That too, earns him no answer. The silence is suffocating as the water rolls underneath the dock, the waves brushing the wood as the two sit there, not a word between them."No." The word hangs for a while in the emptiness of the summer night, the bright rays of the moon suddenly feeling desolate under the conversation's premise. "I never knew them."He turns to them with understanding, a calloused hand gently ruffling their wet hair. "I getcha'. You'd been left behind, maybe?" His question offers up an idea, but the being rejects it with a shake of their head, the colored lights on their body bleaching with the gloomy silence."Maybe.. Everyone I meet says I'm not welcome, really, so... I wouldn't know."
